ARBS Foundation trustees are proud to announce the release a seminal new book written by one of its trustees, Dr Ashak Nathwani AM
Dr Ashak Nathwani AM is a globally recognised expert in energy efficiency and sustainable engineering.
Defeating Mr CO2 – Energy Saving Guide to Achieving Net Zero Homes + Buildings. This
essential guide offers homeowners, builders, and facility managers practical solutions to
reduce energy consumption, cut costs, and work towards net zero carbon emissions in
homes and buildings.
About the Book
Buildings and homes contribute approximately 40 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions.
Through the character Mr CO2 – a personification of carbon dioxide – this book explains how
buildings and the energy they require contribute to climate change.
Defeating Mr CO2 provides actionable strategies for reducing energy usage, making it
possible to build and maintain net zero homes and buildings without compromising comfort.
With more than eleven million homes and one million commercial properties, there is a vast
opportunity to reduce emissions through energy-efficient building design and management.
Dr Nathwani offers a holistic and engaging approach to energy conservation, showing that
we can all play a part in combating climate change and minimising carbon footprints with the
right measures. The book provides readers with clear, cost-effective techniques that anyone
can implement to reduce energy bills while contributing to a sustainable future.
About the Author
Dr Ashak Nathwani AM arrived in Australia in 1972 as a political refugee from Uganda.
Today, he is internationally known for his over five decades of work in promoting energy-
efficient buildings and sustainable engineering and facility management practices. His focus
spans both developed and developing nations, and he is dedicated to discovering
innovative, cost-effective methods to help buildings achieve net zero emissions. Dr
Nathwani’s passion for sharing his knowledge aims to empower individuals and communities
to create a better future for current and upcoming generations.
“Having spent most of my professional life in the design, construction,
commissioning, maintenance and auditing of energy-consuming systems associated with the
built environment, I am able to offer simple and pragmatic solutions on how to reduce energy
and the related greenhouse gases cost-effectively,” said Ashak Nathwani.
“At COP 28, I was disappointed that there wasn’t a focus on saving energy in
buildings responsible for 40 per cent of carbon emissions. Hence, the birth of this book.
1“This book is intended to be the go-to resource for homeowners, engineers, architects,
building managers, and anyone who is interested in tackling the challenge of carbon
emissions from the built environment.”
Praise for Defeating Mr CO2
Defeating Mr CO2 is a must-read for anyone invested in the future of energy, climate action,
and the built environment. It offers crucial insights for homeowners, architects, engineers,
and policymakers striving for sustainable, energy-efficient living. The book blends technical
